Over the years Portland Park has played host to many International and European league teams who have stayed at the Marine Hotel before playing at Hampden, Ibrox or Parkhead, the most famous of those being Brazil (Pele) and Portugal (Eusebio). Jim Stewart, (Scotland No1 in the late 70’s) played for Troon before being called up by Kilmarnock.
The Club itself, ‘Troon F C’, was formed a year after the war and was admitted into the Western League North section for the season 1946/47 playing under the name ‘Troon Juniors FC’. Apart from the mid 50’s the club struggled in the lower half of the league. The club’s only silverware during this period was the Land O’ Burns Cup in season 1953/54. The Western League was replaced by the Ayrshire Region Leagues in season 1968/69 and the club played in the North Section maintaining a mid table performance for most of those years. The club dropped the ‘Juniors’ from its name for the start of the 1970/71 season, from then on being known as ‘Troon FC’. When the Ayrshire Leagues merged into a 1st and 2nd division set-up Troon were placed in the lower league and remained there (1986/87 excepted) until 1996/97 when they were promoted as champions. They were relegated at the end of season 1999/2000 but immediately gained promotion to the intermediate league (2001/2002 had a 3 league structure) the following year as 2nd Division Champions. The League set-up changed once more for season 2002/2003 as the new West Region was formed to amalgamate the leagues of Glasgow/Central region with those from Ayrshire. The leagues now took the form of a two tier structure comprising 2 super league divisions and 3 district divisions (1 in Ayrshire, 2 in Central/Glasgow). To date Troon FC are ever presents in the super league set-up. It is really only during the last 10 or so years that the club has enjoyed a level of success particularly in the South Ayrshire Cup which was won 7 times. The club also won two second division titles during this period, however the West of Scotland Cup triumph in 2004/2005 rates as the Club’s greatest achievement to date.
